I just watched the press conference and live a few doors down from an OPPD detective. I am thankful everyone worked together to find Kelsey and that this man is not free any longer.

This is certainly good news. I just pray that the police have found the right guy on the first try, and can prosecute thsi sick individual quickly.

BTW, will there be a memorial fund (or something similar) for Kelsey? I know there are a lot of people who would love to donate to such a cause...

An earlier poster has indicated hope that Kelsey's killer will get the death penalty. If that is the truly just penalty (no one of us has the right to so judge), so be it. But true justice is in God's hands, not ours. God requires compassion towards all people, even the criminal. I say this, because even Kelsey is no doubt praying for her killer's soul. Besides being a good person, that is what the truly good do once they pass to the Other Side, where only love and mercy rule. Let us allow love and mercy to rule us, here and now, as well. May God have mercy on Kelsey, and may God have mercy on her killer. Lord, have mercy. Fr Mike Logsdon, mjl@ix.netcom.com, www.naorc.org.

Well assuming this is the right guy and evidence shows he is guilty the only question now is whether Phil Kline will allow him to plead guilty and take life without parole rather than face the jury and a possible death sentence.

Note: Its still too early to pass judgement based on innocent until proven guilty but it sure looks tight to me.

I sure hope that they got the right guy...and he gets what he deserves...

I was also wondering if there would be a memorial fund in honor of Kelsey...

I hope they have found the person responsible and that justice will be served in a timely manor. I know that no matter what sentence he receives, it will not heal the wounds he has caused, but may bring some closure. I will pray for the family for comfort and guidence in this hard time, and for each holiday and birthday they will indeed need some strength for.

Amen to that! I send my prayers to that family! She was so beautiful, and I hope that this is the right guy. I feel bad for this guy, for being such a coward and taking an innocent girl.

Never forget the joy she brought to this world. The Lord gave the world 18 wonderful years to your beautiful daughter.
It's those left behind who suffer. Remember she is in a better place, where she will feel no more pain and will always be as beautiful. She looks down on you all and would want you to not be sad for her.
Love and prayers,

Words cannot express the sadness I feel for the Smith family and friends. The story is so tragic. This sweet young girl had such potential. A tear for her rolls down my cheek. Kelsey, you are in the thoughts and prayers of many...

On the news tonight, they announced that there IS a Kelsey Fund. The group is meeting today, 6/7/07 at the Target in Overland Park (where Kelsey was taken) around 6pm for a Biker Run. The proceeds from that will go to start her fund. (If I heard or misunderstood, please correct me, but I am 99.9% sure this is what was on channel 8 during the 6pm News.)

I have a 17 year old sister and a few friends at just graduated High School. I have been in contact with them yesterday and told them no matter what, just to watch your surroundings. This is a dangerous world we all live in and it is such a tragedy that someone could commit this act let alone in broad daylight and in a very busy place.

To the Smith family, no words can be said that will make things right, but with all the evidence on the internet, the local news, and the national news, you can and should be pleased to know that SO MANY people have you in their thoughts and prayers.

Honor Kelsey's memories and honor her life.

May god be with your family during this difficult time. You may never know why she was taken but you will always know why you were blessed with her. I will continue to pray that justice is served for your daughter.

In our prayers.

I'm a 15 year old female, and I have truely been touched by this story. I have been watching the news everyday, hoping that this story would have a happy ending, but sadly it didn't.
Even though I had never met Kelsey, I was so concerned about her as if she were one of my best friends. When I saw that they found her body, I cried.
To the Smith family, I really wish there was something I could say other than the fact that she will always be watching over you.

Please know that your whole family our in my prayers.
I am so very sorry.

Even though the world is a lesser place because of the loss of Kelsey, we can all take comfort in the knowledge that Heaven is now a better place with Kelsey there. And even though I am many states away from where she grew up, I hope that someday I will get the chance to give Kelsey a big hug on behalf of all the animals she would have helped as a veternarian.
All my prayers and love to Kelsey's family and friends.

To the Smith family, I am so sorry that your wonderful Kelsey has been so horribly taken from you.
I hope this prayer has some consoling.
You are in my prayers.

Safely Home

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.

All the pain and suffering is over
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.

And he came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread
And with Jesus' arm to lean on
Could I have one doubt or dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's will.

There is still work waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth-
You shall rest in Jesus' land.

When that work is completed,
He will gently call you home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

Im extremely saddened for this tragic incident and my heart and my prayers go out to you and your family. Kelsey was an amazing girl, sitting next to her all year in math made me realize what an amazing and successful person she was. God needs someone like her to, to be a guardian angel to others so this does not re-occur. Justice will be served and Kelsey will remain in our minds and hearts forever. God bless and lean on God in this time of pain.

News of the tragic ending to this story has so saddened me. It is just so senseless! It brings back memories of the disappearance of VCU student Taylor Biehl a year or two ago here in Virginia.

My sincere sympathies go out to the Smith family and to friends of their daughter. I know something of what you must be feeling as my son was murdered in 2001 at the age of 16 years. I grieve with you for an unfinished life.

I pray God will lend His strength to you and guide you through these trying times.

My condolences to the Smith family, we were all hoping for a different outcome. As a father myself, my heart aches for you. I hope & pray that our Father in Heaven can help to comfort you at this time, know that He is already with Kelsey. Her body may be returning to the earth, but Kelsey lives on.

"God only cries for the living
'Cause it's the living that are left to carry on
And all the angels up in Heaven
They're not grieving because they're gone
There's a smile on their faces
'Cause they're in a better place than they've ever known
God only cries for the living
'Cause it's the living that are so far from home." God only cries, Diamond Rio

"I am a child of God, and He has sent me here, has given me an earthly home with parents kind & dear. Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, help me find the way. Teach me all that I must do to live with Him someday."

Mr. & Mrs. Smith, I think you have taught your daughter well in her full, but short life. God be with you, as He is with Kelsey.

I am so sad for the loss such a lovely young woman with so much promise ahead of her. My prayers are with the Smith family, friends and loved ones. I feel so touched by Kelsey and I never knew her. Still, I grieve as if she were one of my own, but then I believe we are all part of God's family and that makes sense to feel the loss so personally.. she was one of God's special Lights in this world. I wish for justice to be served in full. I know I'm a spiritual, peace loving person, but God didn't put us here to sit on our hands and do nothing. As the family pulls together for strength to mourn the loss of their beautiful daughter, sister, girlfriend and friend, let's work as a community to make sure Kelsey didn't die in vain. It's so sad that we couldn't help her, but perhaps with her as a guiding light, we can come up with ways to stop this from happening to anyone else. God Bless you Smith family and friends. To her boyfriend, you knew her in a special way and I know how this hurts, be strong and reach out to find support. Love to every volunteer and the law enforcement agencies who diligently worked to solve this. I am sad for Kelsey's loss. Rest in peace, young and beautiful soul.

When we heard the news of Kelsey's abduction it was with high hopes that she would be found alive and returned to her family. It was not to be when we heard the news that her body was found the thoughts of how she must have suffered and what her family was going through just stayed on our minds. Even if we didn't know her or the family we share in their grief and deep pain. Where does America go from here..how many young people have to die by the hands of such sick people? When are our people who make the laws and carry them out going to put an end to this bloodshed all over our country. It's such a shame how our country has been drugged with pills and porn that sickens so many minds that make this kind of news a regular event. Don't let Kelsey die in vain let her death start a turn around in our country so our children can come and go without wondering if their trip to the mall is going to be their last. May God bless Kelsey's family we know she is with God as we write our feelings here today.

When will the American people be outraged enough to make our politicians and local police take steps to protect the public from sex offenders and life criminals.

350-400 young women are abducted, raped and killed per year by men. When will this be unacceptable. Write to your leaders; lets stop praying for mercy for these killers and acting like oh well, this is sad. Let this be the last girl that has a website in her dedication. This is unacceptable in the U.S.

I'm so overcome with emotion that this has happened that I don't even know what to say to the family. I don't know her yet it seems like every day a sweet and innocent girl like this is kidnapped and tossed aside. I'm at the point where I won't vote for someone unless they promise to enact tougher laws against offenders, molesters, and pedophiles. When are our kids going to be worth it???? I say the time is NOW before another Kelsey is lost!

To Kelsey's family and friends: my heart truly bleeds for you. I have 3 kids and I cannot imagine what you're going through tonight. God bless you. Please find strength in one another and in knowing that millions of people are hurting FOR you.

My condolenses go out to the family. I can not even imagine what it would be like to go through this. I hold my young kids much tighter after this past weekend. I feel for the search crews who had to find Kelsey and I was desperately hoping she would just be found in that field tired & hungry.

I tire so of reading about young girls / women being kidnapped and murdered. Only a coward would even think about murdering such wonderful people in our lives. I fear, however, that even with the loss of Kelsey, this will happen again. Why? Because our society is too sympathetic to the agresssor and not sympathetic enough to the victim and / or family. It is my hope that some one stands up out there and says enough is enough. Hence fourth, there should be special rules in dealing with the guilty. In my view; the victim's family should have full say regarding punishment. They are the one's who will carry this loss in their hearts for the rest of their lives...all because someone didn't have the guts to be "a man." If he is guilty, the death penalty should be enforced asap.

All my hopes.

First off, let me just say this, NOWHERE have I ever seen a community rally as fast as I saw this community rally. Missouri and Kansans you should be proud of how you came together as a unified entity to help a complete and total stranger to most of you. Unfortunately it takes something like this for us to set aside our differences with one another and come together for a common cause. Although the outcome wasn't what we had all prayed for.
Secondly, hang the guy that did it...hang him from the highest tree, or pole you can find...this stuff has to stop, rehab isn't working, second chances aren't working...I saw one poster said "God will be his final judge" that's all fine and dandy...lets see what we can do to move that judgement date up a few years.

Our thoughts and prayers from Houston to the Smith family. Our daughter goes to KU and will live close to that same Target next year. It could have been any young girl that evening whom that monster decided to attack. I wonder as a nurse and a mother what causes the youth of today to turn out so badly? What is this 25 years to life stuff?? After reading the new developments that the murderer has been arrested, I cannot help but put myself in the family's place. Extrememly mad is an understatement of what I feel towards this murderer. The death penalty is the only option here, as in any murder case. It is rediculous that our justice system drags families through trials for months and sometimes years. And then killers get off with a few years in a high-security resort. With all the free food, free work-out facilities, free cable TV, who wouldn't want to be in prison? The death penalty is the only option, the only way to possibly deter future murderers. If my wife and I are ever lucky enough to be blessed with children and something like this happened - I can promise that I would do everything in my power to see that the monster who did it is executed, preferrably in a painful manner.

We do not know each other, but as one parent to another, my heart goes out to you. I am sorry you have experienced such a devastating loss. No parent should ever have to go through what you have.

Our family will be praying for all of you and we hope that justice is served.

My deepest sympathy,

Cheryl C. Malandrinos

My condolences to the family. I know justice will be served. To this person who did this to her, to him I say, if you did this, you know you did wrong, for the family, for Kelsey, for your family, please tell the truth, why did you do this, what happenned. If you are truly sorry, if it is in your heart, accept responsibility and face the consequences, please do not lie, as that helps no one. Remember no matter what we all beleive someone else is watching and knows the truth, and we have to face him someday for a final judgement. Too many people today want to lie and not be held accountable for their actions. Tell the truth! Even though what you did is so horrible, it will help to know the truth. The world is a bad place these days, people make mistakes, sometimes horrible ones, and we have to face the consequences for our actions. I teach my children that. When they tell the truth, I am more understanding. No one is perfect but we have to change it a little at a time. I have started a website, www.faithandafriend.com as a result of my own life experiences, and wanting to help victims, the people who are hurting. It is still being developed but Kelsey is now a part of this. I never knew her but this story has affected me as it has many other people and I feel she is guiding me now. She is watching over us all, an angel to her family and friends. She is not suffering anymore, she is in a better place, we are the ones who have to use the strength she gives us to make it through and make sure justice is served and may sure she does not die in vain.

To Kelsey's family,
We feel saddened about your loss, God Bless you all. We will keep you in our prayers. She was a beautiful girl, we followed the story in my house, and our hearts are broken for you. No family should have to endure this pain.

To the Smith family, I'm very sorry for the loss of your wonderful daughter. She will not be forgotten. I only hope that the Criminal Justice system stops slapping sex offenders on the wrist, & if the individual arrested is as guilty as I believe he is, I hope they make an example of him, & a painful one at that.

Again, I'm truly sorry for the way this turned out. I will never forget your daughter, & I'm sure many others will not either.

I am so glad that they have apprehended this moster. I truly hope he rots in hell. I read a news article and apparently he has a MySpace page. I think he should know what the world thinks of him.

I cried for Kelsey when I found out she had passed, such a beautiful girl. While I harbor harmful intentions towards the person responsible, I turn my energy to God, for he has plans for this man. On that day she was given wings, and she is soaring up above us. My thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones of Kelsey. R.I.P angel, fly free.

I think that it is sicking to think that we have people in this world like Edwin. I have 2 daughters that mean the world to me, and I am glad that I am so hard on them. I don't let them do anything without me, they say I am to strict, well guess what I will continue to be until I think they can take care of themselves. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family. What a tragic loss, she didn't deserve to die, but we have sick people in this world. I hope that the President, Senate, and whatever else is seeing these things happen and they are going to give tougher sentences to these criminals that think it is ok to kidnap, and murder young women. I hope that Kelsey's family gets justice.

I am now over protective of my girlfriend and my children. Things like this just make me so sick! I don't even know this girl but I want to cause harm to her killer.

I feel that whatever was done to Kelsey needs to happen to the person who murdered her. S
